Job Description

Job Purpose :

What and how much do we need to make (or buy) and where will we make (or buy) it based on capacity constraints?

The role of the master scheduler is to develop supply plans for factories and adjust when required based on actual requirements for a set area of products, product lines, segments, or production lines. The role will balance the required and available capacity to optimize service, working capital and capacity costs. The person in this role is an analytical thinker and a strong communicator with an eye for detail.

The primary role of master scheduler is to translate demand into a granular-level short-term and mid-term supply plans and assure capacity availability. And to ensure right products are produced in the factories.

A master scheduler must keep constant contact with supply network, i.e., inventory planning, demand planning, production planning, new product development, warehousing etc. in order to understand any potential issues that appear which may impact supply plans. He or she can quickly identify events that may cause disruptions to supply plan and make adjustments in order to improve.

Main Responsibilities :

Impact/success measures

An operationally and financially optimized supply plan that is developed, taking into account customer requirements, inventory levels, material availability and available capacity.

Metrics could include capacity utilization, plan stability and adherence, service level, NWC, shortages, COCGS levels, master data performance.

Note: These metrics are not to be viewed as performance measures of the master scheduler, but rather as process health metrics.


  • Monitor supply plans to identify changes and to determine their effect on production schedules and plans.
  • Work closely with production planning teams and other supply functions to ensure producing right products and accurate production plans.
  • Make adjustments to the accommodate short-term customer orders that differ from the agreed sales and operations planning (S&OP).
  • Identify possible future capacity constraints and bottlenecks.
  • Anticipate potential issues by comparing demand with supply in the short-term and mid-term.
  • Leverage new product introduction plans from research and development and/or new product innovation teams into production plans.
  • Strong contributor into the sales & operations planning process

Systems expert

  • Use and maintain current planning systems to create the best supply plans using established processes.
  • Familiarity with the standard system & analytics features like: best-fit/what-if analysis
  • Maintain parameter settings within the area of supply planning

Internal collaborator

  • Develop and maintain capacity planning assumptions and performance measures in conjunction with purchasing, planning, manufacturing operations, logistics/warehousing and commercial teams
  • Contribute and develop to monthly and weekly capacity meetings to ensure high performance delivered


  • Work towards plan alignment within the organization
  • Measure, analyze and report metrics

Process improver

  • Improve and upgrade planning processes, systems and reporting.
  • Analyze service, capacity utilization and stock levels to determine how to increase utilization, reduce waste or optimize customer service
  • Improve service and NWC buy optimizing how to release orders
  • Involved and contribute to improvement projects

Educational Qualification and Experience:

University degree or equivalent experience.

Technical Competencies:

The position will require the following three elements:

  • Knowledge in supply planning and inventory processes, techniques and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of portfolio of products they are planning, including analytics and problem-solving techniques

Relationships across different parts of the organization and strong communication skills In order to be successful:


  • Education in field of expertise like operations, supply chain management, business (B.Sc.) or equivalent years in experience.
  • A certification in supply chain from APICS, certified in production and inventory management (CPIM) or lean.
  • Understanding of capacity scheduling, supply planning and sales & operations planning concepts and techniques.


  • Ability to use planning systems.
  • Ability to use business software (Excel/Word/PowerPoint/others), especially excel
  • Mathematical and analytic abilities.

  • Ability to refine and train algorithms to aid analysis (Advanced users).

Experience :

  • Proven understanding of supply planning, inventory management, S&OP and how it effects financial targets
  • Eight-plus years working experience in similar or related roles
  • Hands-on experience working with multiple partners to resolve exceptions and negotiate best alternatives
